Determining Best Practices for Providing Lay Summaries to Pediatric Study Participants and their Caregivers

To help ensure that patients are recognized as active partners in research—from study design to dissemination of results—the RC&E team has pioneered the creation of lay summaries, which are an aggregate of general study findings that apply to all participants, as well as thank-you notes for study participants. In preparation for the development of lay summaries for all studies within the Pediatric Trials Network, the team undertook formative research to ensure the materials provided to pediatric study participants and their parents/caregivers were effective and engaging.
