Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Research Fellowship

The program offers in-depth coursework in clinical research methodology, biostatistics, and regulatory affairs; access to world-class clinical and translational research faculty; and the ability to develop and conduct projects under the direct mentorship of faculty in the DCRI and Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine.

The DCRI offers internationally recognized research programs in asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and lung transplantation, with access to one of the largest lung transplant programs in the world. The DCRI also serves as the data coordination center for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-sponsored IPFnet, which has made significant contributions to understanding idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis therapeutics, and is the administrative coordinating center for the Lung Regeneration and Repair.

Ongoing projects in the pulmonary therapeutic area include a wide range of experiences in translational research, genetic and genomic technologies, early phase clinical trials, analysis of large datasets (including UNOS and the Clinicaltrials.gov database), and outcomes research using disease registries. Pulmonary and critical-care medicine research fellows will also have unparalleled access to large clinical trial, registry, and cardiovascular databases housed within the DCRI to perform secondary analyses and the full range of DCRI resources are available to further this work, including biostatistical, business development, communications, and publications support.

• Pulmonary and critical care medicine research fellows from both the Duke Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship program and from outside institutions spend 2 years in the research fellowship to comprehensively develop their clinical research skills and background.
• All research fellows are encouraged and supported to obtain didactic training in clinical research methodology, biostatistics, and decision analyses through degree programs at the Duke University School of Medicine. Fellows with a graduate degree prior to coming to the DCRI will develop a curricular plan tailored to their needs with the fellowship director.

• Each research fellow has a primary research mentor from the DCRI faculty, and secondary mentors are available through the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine if necessary. The DCRI faculty member will guide the fellow’s overall research program and work directly with him or her on research projects. Faculty members meet with fellows at least weekly.
• The DCRI is committed to training the next generation of clinical researchers, and the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Research Fellowship provides rigorous training in research methodology while preparing fellows for an academic career.
