In the first episode of a three-part series on obesity and GLP-1 medications, hosts Manesh Patel and Emily O'Brien sit down with Jennifer Norris, a physician assistant at the Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery, to explore the evolving landscape of obesity treatment. Norris shares her journey from urgent care to obesity medicine, discussing how the field has evolved with the introduction of GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy, among others. The conversation addresses common misconceptions about obesity, the complex interplay of genetics, biology, and environment in weight management, and the challenges patients face in accessing effective treatments. Norris emphasizes that obesity is a chronic disease requiring a multimodal approach and discusses both the promise and limitations of current therapies.
